CO-CHAIR:

ELIGIBILITY:

Students aged 13 – 18

REQUIREMENTS:

Division I, Grades  8 – 10: Each student will have a total of 4 minutes to perform two contrasting musical theater cuts (approximately 32 bars) and a one-minute monologue.

Division II, Grades 11  – 12: See above.

Division III, Males Grades 8 – 12: See requirements above. This division will be offered only if a minimum of six male students register. If there are less than six male students, males will perform in Divisions I & II.

JUDGING:

Judges will be looking for students to demonstrate the ability to sing a healthy belt/mix as well as “legit” technique. For example, a student could choose to sing a cut of a Golden Age song using classical technique and a 32-bar cut of an uptempo contemporary song incorporating a healthy belt. The goal is to present contrasting selections that demonstrate the student’s grasp of the wide range of musical theater styles and techniques.

AWARDS:

Judges will award 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in each division, and may elect to award Honorable Mentions to deserving students. 1st place in each division will be awarded $200; 2nd place will be awarded $100; and 3rd place will be awarded $50.

TEACHER GUIDELINES:

Singers may bring their own accompanists. Teachers and coaches may not accompany their students. Students must bring a legal copy of each of their songs. Written comments from the judges will be given to the teachers of the contestants at the end of the competition. The decision of the judges will be final. Participating teachers are expected to assist the chair as needed based on the number of students enrolled, regardless of subsequent student withdrawals.
