Students aged 13 – 18
Division I, Ages 13 – 15: Each student will have a total of 4 minutes to perform one musical theatre song in its entirety and one contrasting 32-bar cut (under 60 seconds) of a musical theater song. One of the selections must be an uptempo.
Division II, Ages 16 – 18: Each student will have a total of 4 minutes to perform one musical theater song in its entirety and one contrasting 32-bar cuts (each under 60 seconds) of musical theater songs. One of the selections must be an uptempo.
Division III, Males aged 13 – 18: See requirements above. This division will be offered only if a minimum of six male students register. If there are less than six male students, males will perform in Divisions I & II.
Judges will be looking for students to demonstrate the ability to sing a healthy belt as well as “legit” technique. For example, a student could choose to sing an entire Golden Age song using classical technique and a 32-bar cut of an uptempo contemporary song incorporating a healthy belt. The goal is to present contrasting selections that demonstrate the student’s grasp of the wide range of musical theatre styles and techniques.
Judges will award 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in each division, and may elect to award Honorable Mentions to deserving students. First and second place winners will be invited to perform in an Honors Recital on May 18 at 5:30 p.m. at the Women’s Club of Arlington. Winners will perform the song they chose to sing in its entirety.
Singers may bring their own accompanists or may employ Ruth Locker by contacting her [email protected] Teachers and coaches may not accompany their students. Students must bring a legal copy of each of their songs. Written comments from the judges will be given to the teachers of the contestants at the end of the competition. The decision of the judges will be final. Participating teachers are expected to assist the chair as needed based on the number of students enrolled, regardless of subsequent student withdrawals.
Teachers must agree to abide by the Rules for Competitive Events.
