Messiah United Methodist Church, a community of faith with an exceptional music tradition in
Springfield, Virginia is seeking a professional to serve as the part-time Leader of Handbell
Music. This person will be part of a team bringing music into the life of the church while
continuing to grow our community.
The Handbell Music Leader will lead children, youth, and adults in age and skill appropriate
choirs in expressing their faith and a love for the Lord through ringing. The handbell choirs will
work independently and in concert with the greater music program. Working under the
direction of the Director of Music Ministry, the incumbent will be able to work with an
Organist/Accompanist, a Children’s Choir Director, several staff musicians, and additional
contract musicians as warranted. An important part of this position is introducing young
children to music through ringing. As time and ability permits the Handbell Music Leader will
stand-up and lead instrumental groups.
In addition to having proven musical competencies and talents, we are seeking a candidate of
strong Christian faith, with excellent interpersonal skills and a commitment to teamwork.
Qualifications and skills required include: a strong background in music and education with a
music education degree desirable; several years of experience ringing handbells; ability in
piano, keyboard, or other musical instrument is desirable; and, skill in working with volunteers
with various age, talent, and commitment levels. The ability to work with the parents of
children is essential. The successful candidate will need to complete a background check and
annual child protection training.
The Handbell Leader leads a weekly children’s rehearsal during the Sunday School hour (10:40 –
11:10), and adult handbell rehearsals on Sunday and/or Monday evenings. Musical offerings are
presented at 9 AM and 11:15 AM worship once per month, as well as for concerts and special
events.
This is a part-time, salaried position averaging 10 hours per week with a salary of $10,500. A
